If you’ve recently started your clear aligner journey, you’re likely eager to see your results. It takes a bit of time, but the process tends to go smoothly. You may have chosen this treatment for its discreet, comfortable benefits, but you might still be wondering: does SureSmile hurt? Some soreness is normal and a sign that your trays are working as intended. That said, here are five tips to help you find relief along the way.

Keep Your Aligners In for 22 Hours a Day

Discomfort while wearing your trays is expected. It comes from the gentle pressure guiding your teeth into their desired positions. As tempting as it might be to take them out, it’s best to keep them in. You need to wear them for 20 to 22 hours a day to avoid delays, so staying consistent actually helps you adjust more quickly.

Change Your Diet

Certain foods can be tougher to enjoy than usual with a sore smile. Hard, crunchy, sticky, and chewy foods require more effort to bite through, which can add to your discomfort. Sticking to softer foods for a little while can make a big difference.

Options like yogurt, smoothies, applesauce, and mashed potatoes are easy on your teeth and still satisfying. This adjustment is only temporary, and you’ll be back to your usual diet before long.

Place Dental Wax

If the edges of your SureSmile trays feel sharp or irritate the inside of your cheeks, dental wax can offer a simple solution. Just roll a small ball of wax between your fingers and gently press it over the irritating areas to create a protective barrier.

Have Cold Water

Sipping on a cold glass of water can also help ease discomfort, as the cool temperature relaxes and numbs the muscles in your mouth. A cold pack applied in 10-minute intervals can offer similar relief if your teeth are sensitive.

Take Pain Relievers

If your tenderness is too much, an over-the-counter medication can help. Your dentist can offer guidance on which option might work best for you, or you might already have some. Just be sure to follow the dosage instructions on the label.

Keep these tips in mind as you move through your SureSmile treatment. Everyone’s experience is a little different, so take time to find what works for you. The soreness should ease up as you settle into each new set of aligners. Stick to them and your overall journey toward a healthier bite can be a little smoother.
